Taking a motorbike tour is a great way to get a feeling for Rote Island–especially to meet the locals and see how they live. You really can’t get lost taking the main road around the island – but beware, it gets curvy, bumpy and steep at times. Leaving SEED Resort and going south you’ll soon arrive in the village of Boa. There you’ll see small, shabby yet somehow immaculate local housing. Every house seemingly painted brighter and more creatively than the next. The road is lined with beautiful coconut palms. It’s a joy to take it slow, and really absorb your surroundings – and to let the baby ducklings, chickens, pigs, and puppies cross the road of course.
You’ll become very skilled in holding the handlebars with one hand and using the other to give local children a ‘high 5’. A few hundred meters further and stunning ocean views open up. There are beaches along the whole promenade where you can stop for a dip. Exotic and interesting foliage and plant life, estuaries, ancient haunted looking mangroves engulfed in turquoise rivulets and one sweet secluded village after the next follow. One road, many an adventure to be had.
